Peer Supporters for Youths with Non-Suicidal Self-Injury

Description of volunteering opportunity:
-
Walk with Me (WWM) is a pilot peer support program for youths/service users aged 15-25 who are engaging/ at risk of NSSI.
-
WWM aims to reduce prevalence of NSSI behaviours and improve youths' mental wellness in the longer run. This is an add-on service, to complement and support existing professional intervention.
-
Program also aims to build up a community of peer supporters, that feel empowered in their ability to effect change and advocate for youths with NSSI in society.
-
Program objectives for peer supporters/volunteers include (1) equipping them with knowledge of the needs of youths with NSSI to facilitate advocacy and (2) increasing self-efficacy of peer supporters in providing empathetic emotional support to youths with/at risk of NSSI.
Additional details:
As a volunteer, you will be required of the following:
-
Between 19 - 35 years old
-
Commit minimally 8 months for each run
-
Willing and able to commit to trainings, group supervision sessions and monthly meetups with youths
-
Comfortable working with youths aged 12 to 25 years old
-
Comfortable supporting youths at risk of or engaging in NSSI
-
Enjoy interacting with youths and supporting them with their mental health concerns in their mental wellness journey

Volunteers are required to outreach to families to promote, educate and support them in the application of our Clubhouse membership for their children.

Undergo a training prior to a programme run to be equipped with information on programme and guided reading approach

Read with children, either in pairs or in small groups

Engage in discussion with the children to build up their confidence and reading and comprehension skills

Engage persons with dementia in cognitively stimulating activities led by the centre staff, which includes arts and crafts, senior-friendly games, or simple body exercises

Volunteers are required to undergo a volunteer orientation session prior to volunteering. This is to provide volunteers with a better understanding of dementia, share communication tips when engaging with persons with dementia, and to go through their volunteering guidelines
